Mascaro hosts 2nd Annual award ceremony to honor 10 students that participated in The Respect Program Poster Contest.
Local waste company, J. P. Mascaro & Sons, are taking their commitment to The Respect Program and to the children in the community very seriously. The Respect Program has reached out to 25,000 students with presentations in schools, camps, and kids’ fairs, the company also sponsored a poster contest to spark interest in students outside of the classroom. In the 2007-2008 season The Respect Program received about 100 entries to their Poster contest.
The contest, like The Respect Program itself, was free to enter. This year, out of an approximate 25,000 children that participated in the program, one boy and nine girls will be awarded prizes at an award ceremony held in the new media center at J. P. Mascaro & Sons’ corporate headquarters in Audubon, PA on Wednesday, June 19, 2008 at 1pm. The winners come from grades 3, 4, and 5 from several different schools: students from Saint Elizabeth in Whitehall, Pottsgrove Elementary in Pottstown, Holy Family in Phoenixville, Saint Agnes in Sellersville, The Immaculate Heart of Mary in Philadelphia and Mother of Divine Providence in King of Prussia. The prizes are: 1st place: Brand new laptop computer; 2nd place: $100 Barnes & Nobles gift card; 3rd place: $75 Barnes & Nobles gift card; 4th place: $50 Barnes & Nobles gift card; and the rest are honorable mentions each get $25 Barnes & Nobles gift cards.
The topic of the contest was the issue of “Respect” and anything dealing with that subject matter, giving the kids plenty of opportunity to be as creative as they wanted to be. All of the information about the contest was included in The Respect Program activity books so that the children could refer back to the rules and directions as often as needed. J. P. Mascaro & Sons plan on sponsoring a poster contest on a yearly basis or even twice a year, depending on the response in order to spark creativity and to get students to continue thinking about issues dealing with respect long after The Respect Program leaves their school.
