$8 Million Gas To Energy Project For Berks County Landfill Gets OK By State

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has issued a permit for a gas to energy plant at the Pioneer Crossing Landfill, a J.P. Mascaro & Sons affiliated facility in Exeter Township, Berks County. The gas to energy plant will beneficially use methane gas generated from waste disposed at the landfill to produce 50 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough to power approximately 12,000 homes.

Mascaro partnered with a German company, G.A.S. Access Pioneer Crossing Energy, LLC, the total cost of the project will be $8,000,000 dollars. The 6.4-megawatt plant will generate electricity from four landfill gas powered engine generator sets housed in self-contained units.

Speaking to the project, Joseph P. Mascaro, III, Mascaro’s Director of Environmental Compliance said: “Our company is extremely happy to partner with G.A.S. Access on this project which not only benefits the environment by reducing gas emissions, but which also benefits consumers by generating power from a waste product.” Mascaro added, “The DEP review of this permit application was exhaustive and the operating plant will meet all technical and regulatory standards.”

The gas plant is an important component of the recent DEP approved landfill expansion permit at Pioneer Crossing where the Mascaro facility got an additional 20 years of disposal capacity and where Mascaro successfully met the new and stringent “harms/benefits regulatory standard” relating to permitting. Under that standard, Mascaro successfully demonstrated that the benefits from the Pioneer Crossing Landfill Expansion Project clearly outweigh any harms from the project.

Pioneer Crossing landfill is a major provider of environmentally sound disposal services in the local region. The landfill services many municipalities, industrial and commercial customers. The facility is well operated and respected in the industry, and the additional disposal capacity from the recent DEP approved expansion assures that Mascaro will have the long-term disposal infrastructure necessary to serve its many customers in the municipal, commercial and industrial sectors now and in the future.
