SUBJECT: MASCARO RECEIVES EXCELLENCE AWARD IN SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE

The Board of Managers from the Pennsylvania Self-Insurers’ Association (PSIA) will recognize J.P. Mascaro & Sons on September 13, 2010 with an “Award of Excellence” for 2009 in training, safety and communication. The PSIA board of managers based their decision upon reviewing a “New Hire Safety & Compliance Manual” developed by Mascaro officials. Development of the manual was a collaboration in Risk Management, Operations, Communications, Safety and Environmental Compliance departments of J.P. Mascaro. Mascaro officials, Mike Mascaro, Director of Operations, Ben Mascaro, Director of Safety and Compliance, Francine Ambrosino Zahuranec, Corporate Liability Claims Manager, Linda Gregory, Compensation Claims Manager, and the Director of Communications, Frank Sau, produced a policy handbook that effectively relates training and safety intricacies of the solid waste industry. The manual outlines safe practices and compliance procedures in the waste management field for employees of Mascaro and is a part of the extensive orientation and new hire safety training, for drivers, mechanics, and helpers, new to the solid waste industry. Ms Linda Gregory, Workers’ Compensation Claims Manager for Mascaro, presented the manual at the 2009 PA Bureau of Workers’ Compensation Conference held in the spring of 2009, “Ensuring Effective Safety Training, Documentation and Communication”.  

Mascaro uses the “New Hire Safety & Compliance Manual” in its monthly safety meetings, as well as weekly tailgate meetings at its divisions that span across Pennsylvania. Effective communication and Month End safety reports have been instrumental in reducing work related injuries. Since instituting this policy Mascaro has received outstanding results for safety training and communication to prevent and reduce injuries in the field. “Our number one goal each and every day is to provide safe service, in a responsible and compliant manner”, said Gregory, as she accepted the award.
