Mascaro Introduces Its “RESPECT Program” to Area Elementary Schools

Respect is an important character trait often overlooked in today’s fast paced world.  This is not a good thing.  Most core values, including respect, are best learned while young, and that is why local waste company, J.P. Mascaro & Sons, is set to bring to area elementary schools an exciting new program developed specifically for young children.

The program, simply called RESPECT, is designed to remind children of the importance of respect in their lives.  Geared towards students in third to fifth grades, Mascaro’s RESPECT Program is interesting, interactive and fun.  It also incorporates several of the State’s educational standards.

Speaking about the program, company president, Pat Mascaro, said, “Our company is extremely excited about the RESPECT Program; we hired an experienced teacher to develop the program and serve as the classroom presenter; and we have committed $1,250,000 for the program’s initial five year term.
The Mascaro family member who will serve as corporate liaison for the RESPECT Program is Pat Mascaro, Jr., the company president’s son.  Pat serves as the General Manager of Mascaro’s Berks Operating Division and the idea for the RESPECT Program was his.

The RESPECT Program Coordinator and Presenter is Diana Iskolsky, an energetic instructor who has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education and more than five years of elementary teaching experience.  Iskolsky said, “I loved my work with young children in the classroom, but I wanted to take my communication and educational skills into the private sector.  The Mascaro RESPECT Program is a unique opportunity for me and I know the children will enjoy it.”

The RESPECT Program presentation focuses on the meaning and importance of respect, how to show respect and who to respect including yourself, parents, teachers, friends, property, authority and the environment.

Discussing the classroom presentation Iskolsky said, “I will arrive at the school in our new lime green decaled RESPECT Program van with the program mascot, “DUMPO” the elephant, and together we will present an interesting and interactive 30 to 40 minute program.  Students will receive give away surprises and activity booklets for their enjoyment.  The schools will be given posters with RESPECT Program themes that can be displayed on site or given to students to take home.  Additionally, the program will be sponsoring contests and awarding prizes to students.”

Iskolsky added, “As a field trip, interested classes and groups can also come to Mascaro’s Audubon headquarters building where the RESPECT Program will be presented in the company’s media room.”
In conjunction with the in-class program, Iskolsky and company Director of Communications, Frank Sau, have also developed a web site at www.theRESPECTprogram.com.  The site is full of games and educational activities that children are sure to enjoy.

Some may consider it unusual for a trash company to develop and sponsor a program such as this, but not company president, Pat Mascaro.  “I learned the importance of respect from my parents and teachers when I was young.  Self-respect, respect of others and respect for the environment will help to carry young students a long way in their lives and I can’t think of a better way for my company to participate in and to have a positive impact on something that really matters”, said Mascaro.

“J.P. Mascaro & Sons, as a company, has a long history of supporting youth and educational activities, and our RESPECT Program is a natural extension of what we have been doing for years,” added Mascaro.
